articles
The word article means a particular thing which is seen separately from others in a group.
Children, you already know what are vowels and consonants.
However, for the little ones, let me tell you once again.
The English alphabet has 26 letters from A to Z.
a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z
The bigger ones are vowels and the rest are consonants.
Vowels : a, e, i, o, u.
Consonants : b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z.
We write ‘a’ in front of words beginning with consonants.
Like, a ball, a girl, a cloud, a doll, a flower, a house, etc.
And, we write ‘an’ in front of words beginning with vowels.
Like, an egg, an orange, an inkpot, an ox, an umbrella, an eye, etc.
Normally, when we talk about something for the first time, we use ‘a’ or ‘an’. And if we have to talk about the same thing again, we use ‘the’ for it.
Like, Ayudh has a car. He takes the car to office, everyday.
He washes the car every Sunday.
A, An, The, are called articles.
But there are some rules to be remembered.
Rule 1
A or An is used for single countable noun (anything that can be counted, is a countable noun. Like table, egg, chair, umbrella, hand, ox, pen, etc).
Like, a table, an egg, a chair, an umbrella, a hand, an ox, a pen, etc.
Rule 2
A is used before a noun that begins with a consonant sound.
Like, a map, a lock, a basket, a uniform, a engine, a university.
In ‘uniform’, ‘engine’ and ‘university’, the first letters, ‘u’, ‘e’ and ‘u’ are pronounced as the letters itself. That is known as the consonant sound.
Rule 3
An is used before all nouns beginning with a vowel but not having a consonant sound.
Like, an orange, an orangutan, an inkpot, an apple, an egg, etc.
Rule 4
The is used for a noun which is only one in number.
Like, the earth, the Ganga, the sun, the moon, the Himalayas, the Indian Ocean, etc.
Rule 5
The is used for both singular and plural nouns for all genders.
Like, the boy, the boys, the girl, the girls, the man, the men, the lady, the ladies, the table, the tables, the tree, the trees, etc.
Rule 6
The is used before a noun which has already been mentioned once.
Like, I have a rose in my garden. The rose is red in colour.
Monu has a dog. The dog is very playful.
