The word preposition means, “that which is placed before”.
We can also say, a preposition is a word or a group of words placed before a noun or a pronoun to show its relation with some other word in the sentence.
The noun or the pronoun which is used with a preposition is called its ‘object’.
Normally, a preposition comes before a noun.
Example: Pour the water in the glass. ‘In’ is the preposition which tells the relation between the nouns, water and glass.
A preposition may join : 1. A noun to a noun.
2. A noun to an adjective.
3. A noun to a verb.
